Investigating Neutral Buoyancy: Hands-On, Authentic Learning for Math and Science Students
When preparing for space missions, NASA astronauts visit the Neutral Buoyancy Pool to simulate the feeling of working aboard the International Space Station.  In this activity, participants will have to think like NASA engineers to use Neutral Buoyancy to make predictions and test hypotheses.  Participants will investigate the forces acting on a buoyant object to determine from a scatter plot the best fit line using technology.  In the activity, participants will explore the relationship between volume and mass as they predict the exact mass needed to sink an object to the water’s surface, simulating neutral buoyancy.  Participants will utilize concepts from Geometry and Algebra as well as technology for finding the best fit line (linear regression) to help them in the problem solving process.   "Participants will experience an instructional best practice lesson that unites Math and Science concepts.  Participants will experience an authentic, real-world activity working with linear regression and technology that supports student learning.  Participants will use a free, web-based technology application (Desmos) that can greatly impact teaching and learning in the areas of Math and Science. Tessellate into Higher Thinking
This hands-on session demonstrates a cross-curricular math and art lesson focused on creating colorful MC Escher style tessellations. Translation, reflection and rotation designs will all be demonstrated, ready to immediately implement in your intermediate to high school math or art classroom.   Participants will be able create colorful MC Escher style tessellations that bring art and mathematics into the same lesson.
