Our session will provide teachers with an introduction to literacy in multiple disciplines and we will share the ideas we have for how this could be implemented in a Readers/Writer's Workshop classroom. Participants will be encouraged to brainstorm ideas based off of the goal that teacher's provide an opportunity for students to interact with languages in varied disciplines beyond the English curriculum. How can we teach meta-cognitive skills to help them navigate and extrapolate the content’s formatting, jargon, and style characterized by the discipline? How does a Scientist think and communicate? What about Historians or Mathematicians? Consider the tools that students will need in order to write across multiple disciplines after they have graduated high school and implement strategies in their classes in order to better prepare their students for different styles of writing. They will also have new angles from which to approach choice reading and use it to help their students develop questions and knowledge about disciplines other than ELA.
