"Have you ever been speaking to someone about something sensitive and you could tell that they weren't really listening? Have you ever been listening to someone speak and all you could think was ""What's for dinner?"" or ""My 4th-period class was today?"" What about when your husband or wife complained to you about something that you did, but all you could think of was how long it had been since they did ________? Emphatic listening builds trust and respect between people. It creates a safe environment by encouraging people to be open and honest about their thoughts and feelings. It moves past the surface of transparency and into the power of vulnerability. However, emphatic listening does not come naturally to people. It is a practice that must be studied, applied, repeated, and evaluated over the course of time. By examining our own listening practices as educators, we can promote a culture of emphatic listening in our classroom and throughout our school. Furthermore, we can support students in addressing struggles using an emphatic listening conflict resolution protocol." Participants will learn the foundation of emphatic listening, practice emphatic listening, learn an emphatic listening conflict resolution protocol, and practice implementing the protocol in the classroom.
