Editing and Revising Original Compositions Using Microsoft Word's "Track Changes" Feature

"Teaching Point: editing and revising are crucial steps within the writing process. Microsoft Word’s “Track Changes” feature supports meaningful and authentic revising and editing of students’ original compositions. The presentation will focus on:
1. teaching students to use “Track Changes” in their independent editing/revising;
2. teaching students to use “Track Changes” in combination with the “Peer Editing” feature in itslearning; and
3. using “Track Changes” to provide teacher feedback. Empirical Data: in the 2nd Quarter, the English III teaching team at Clear Brook High School assigned an original composition which students uploaded to itslearning as a first draft; students were subsequently taught to use the “Track Changes” feature in Word and were assigned peer editing tasks in itslearning. Students eventually turned in a second draft which reflected peer feedback, teacher feedback, and meaningful and authentic self-editing/revising.

Anticipated Structure of Presentation:
1. relate our experience using “Track Changes” by explaining the assignments we gave and by showing a few student samples (redacted and/or used with permission of students);
2. demonstrate how to use the “Track Changes” feature (via projector);
3. hand out a hard copy of a sample and instructions (for participants to keep); and
4. conduct a practice session – participants will use their laptops to compose an original paragraph; next, participants will experiment using the ""Track Changes"" feature, taking on 3 different roles: (i)) student, (ii) peer, (iii) teacher. "
